  • 1953     Scouting in Disley first started when a group of Sea Scouts from Strines transferred to Disley and formed the 1st Disley and High Lane Sea Scouts, based at the loft of Mr Pott’s butchers shop.  The first Group leaders were Gilbert Sainter, Albert King and Joyce Oldham.  The Group had 24 Wolf Cubs, 12 Sea Scouts and 3 Senior Sea Scouts.  The designation as Sea Scouts may appear slightly strange but the Group did participate in water activities on the canal .
  • 1957     The Sea Scout designation was dropped and the Group became 1st Disley and High Lane Scouts.

  • 1958     The Group lost its HQ in Disley.  The Scout section meets temporarily in High Lane.

  • 1959     A new headquarters is found on Ring-o-Bells Lane.

  • 1960     On 8th March the Disley and High Lane branches of the Group separated and the 1st Disley Group was officially formed.  The first Group Scout Master was Harry Tootell and the other leaders were Bill Openshaw, Syd Holmes, Glynne Roberts, Vera Broadhurst and Bill Lofthouse.  The new Group had 36 Wolf Cubs and 27 Boy Scouts.  An official opening ceremony was held on Whit Monday, 6th June 1960.  This lasted all day, from 10am until 11.30pm and included a fire lighting competition, an inspection by the Field Commissioner, an official opening by Colonel J.A. Christie-Miller, President of Goyt District, a fairground, morris and sword dancing, films of the Jubilee Jamboree, a whist drive, supper dance and cabaret.  The original Group neckerchief was all green.

  • 1967     Following the change of the colour of Scout shirts from khaki to green, the Group designed a new neckerchief in contrasting colours to stand out from the shirt – the result was the orange and red we still have today.

  • 1970     Work commences on building a new Scout Hut on Station Approach.

  • 1971     The current Scout Hut is completed.

  • 1987    The Group is threatened with closure as its membership falls to a low of 22 with just 3 Scouts and 2 warranted leaders for the whole Group.  The Scout section meets temporarily with High Lane Scouts.

  • 1990     The Beaver Scout Colony is formed.

  • 1994     The first annual Barnswood Patrol Competition Camp is held, won by Eagles Patrol led by Richard Thompson.

  • 1996     Total membership reaches a high point of 89 members.

  • 1998     Scout section summer camp to France.

  • 1999     Venture Scout Unit established.

  • 2001     First Group family camp held at Linnet Clough.

  • 2002     The Scout section welcomes its first female members.

  • 2003     Group Scout Fellowship formed; Venture Scouts cease and become Explorer Scouts operated by Goyt District but partnered with the Scout Group.

  • 2006     The Group looks forward to celebrations for the centenary of Scouting in 2007, the acceptance of female members into the Beaver and Cub sections and a Scout section international expedition to Slovakia.

  • 2007 Centenary celebrations!!! 100 years of Scouting, Scouts and Explorers celebrate in Slovakia on Mount Sitno with local groups at sunrise, our other members attend a sunrise service in Lyme Park. All the Group attended the centenary celebrations at Linnet Clough in the Wolves Camp!
