Disley Explorers - A whole new world of adventure...

The Explorer Scout Group is for girls and boys between the ages of 15 and 18.  Being an Explorer Scout in Disley is intended to be about enjoying new experiences, facing worthwhile challenges, learning useful skills and having fun.

Although many of the members have been Cubs and Scouts, that is certainly not a requirement for joining.

In Disley we try to have a varied program of activities, where the aim is that they should be enjoyable and entertaining, while at the same time giving young people (in a group environment) the opportunity to try new activities, gain confidence and acquire skills that will be useful in later life.

By way of example, recent programs have included the following:

  • training together for and taking part in the Greater Manchester Run

  • kayaking on Roman Lakes at Marple

  • clay pigeon shooting at Cloudside Shooting Ground

  • climbing at Marple Climbing Centre

  • camping on the coast in North Wales

  • winter night hike over the moors between Disley and Kettleshulme

  • and, going out for a quiet game of pool and snooker in Hazel Grove

Although part of the National Scout Movement, Disley Explorers tends to operate in a fairly relaxed atmosphere.  Members are however expected to attend the two principal annual parades, St George’s Day and Armistice Day, in Explorer Scout uniform.  We also travel to and from camps in uniform.

The underlying philosophy of the leaders is that, although some of our activities may be challenging, the intention must always be for the members to have fun as well as gaining experience and achievements.
