1st Disley Beaver Colony - Introductory Information
Welcome to 1st Disley Beaver Group
What is the Beaver Group?
This is the first section of 1st Disley Scout Group. The age range is from 6 to 8 years old, when it is hoped they move onto Cubs. The Beaver Leaders are Lucy Noworyta (01663 762610/ 07857 752830) and Leah Jackson. Carole Haywood is a regular helper at our weekly meetings and we also have help from Young Leaders who are older Explorer Scouts. All leaders are volunteers and are CRB cleared. In order for parents to be involved in Beavers we have a weekly "parent rota". Beavers get together every Wednesday during term time from 6.00 - 7.00pm at the Group Headquarters on Station Approach. Very often, during the spring and summer we will go out for walks and parents will be advised of any arrangements.
What do Beavers do?
There are great differences between the activities that Beavers will be able to do mainly due to development between the ages of 6 and 8 so we vary activities in accordance with this. Our weekly meetings include a main activity which range from indoor craft and baking activities to more adventurous outdoor activities which include den building, orienteering and grass sledging. Beavers are very "busy" children at this age with lots of energy, so we always try to include a game to burn off some of this excitement! Juice and a biscuit are given to Beavers half way through the meeting. We also have our annual sleepover in October and enjoy taking part in District events such as ‘Join in Jamboree Days’. The Beavers are in 4 lodge groups with 4/5 in each group. It is important that Beavers are happy in their groups - so we watch this carefully.
Promise and Motto
The Beaver Promise, which all Beavers are encouraged to learn before they are invested, is "I promise to do my best to be kind and helpful and to love God". The motto is "Be Prepared"
Investitures
All beavers are invested into the Scout movement when they have been at Beavers for 4/6 weeks. Parents are informed of when their child will be making his Beaver promise and are invited to watch the 5-minute investiture. All Beavers are encouraged and praised when they have tried hard with something, whether it be an activity or being polite and helpful during the meeting. At the end of each meeting we present “Beaver of the Week" - a special Beaver, which can be taken for the week (but please return to a Leader at the next meeting!).
Badges
We try and link all our activities to badge work. The badges are split accordingly - The Activity Badges – Air Activities, Animal Friend, Creative, Experiment, Explore, Faith, Health and Fitness, Healthy Eating, Hobbies, Imagination and Safety. The Challenge Badges - Outdoor, Friendship, Promise, Fitness, Creative and Global. The Staged Activity Badges – Emergency Aid, Hikes Away, Technology, Musician, Nights Away and Swimmer.
Do please get in touch with any of the Beaver leaders if you require any further information or there is any more we can tell you about Beaver Scouts.
Have fun!
